
Dr. Nicholas O'Rourke is a distinguished Senior Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) and the Head of HPB ( Liver, Pancreas and Biliary) Surgery at Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. With extensive experience, Dr. O'Rourke also serves at Wesley Private Hospital as a Senior VMO, a member of the Medical Advisory Committee, and the Clinical Lead in Surgery at Uniting Care Medical School. His professional journey is marked by significant national and international roles, enhancing his expertise and influence in the medical community.
Nationally, Dr. O'Rourke has served as an Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and held leadership positions within the Australian and New Zealand Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (ANZHPBA), including Immediate ex-Chairman of Training and Past President. His contributions to HPB surgery training have been pivotal, setting up post-fellowship training programs across Australasia and supervising international and national HPB fellows.
Internationally, Dr. O'Rourke has held esteemed roles such as the Immediate Past Secretary General of the International Laparoscopic Liver Society (ILLS) and committee positions with the International HPB Association (IHPBA) Foundation and the Asian Laparoscopic Liver Society. He represents Australia in the Asian Chapter of the International Society of Fluorescent Guided Surgery (ISFGS).
Dr. O'Rourke's clinical interests include advanced laparoscopic approaches to HPB surgery, spleen function and surgery, hernia surgery, and bariatric obesity surgery. As an educator, he is an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland School of Medicine, providing weekly tutorials and supervising medical students from UQ, Bond, Griffith and OAM universities.
His commitment to surgical innovation is demonstrated through numerous visiting professorships and invited presentations at international conferences. Dr. O'Rourke's humanitarian efforts include leading medical teams to Samoa and Sri Lanka, teaching and performing laparoscopic surgeries.
